Overview
Granite includes a dedicated Backroad Status map layer. This layer helps you make safer decisions by showing the latest backroad conditions, gate statuses, obstacles, and more across B.C. and Alberta.
Our Backroad Status layer is powered by a combination of industry data and community-sourced reports from the excellent Backroad Status Project. Huge shout-out and massive thanks to Francis Bailey and Andrea Tate for building and maintaining such a valuable resource for the entire backcountry community.
How do I enable the Backroad Status Layer?
Open the Map Layers Menu by clicking the layers icon
Scroll down to the "More Layers" section
Toggle the "Backroad Status" layer
Roads and gates will now show their status via a Green, Yellow, Red system
Tap on a specific road or gate to view additional details such as latest update timestamps, additional notes, etc. (This feature is coming soon)
How up-to-date is the Backroad Status Layer?
Because the data relies on real users heading into these areas and submitting updates, some locations are refreshed more frequently than others. We also recommend checking government closure bulletins for additional data.
Government Bulletins:
We know that freshness matters—especially when planning remote travel—so we're actively working on adding “Last Updated” indicators in our app. This will help you quickly understand how recent each report is and make more informed decisions before heading out.
How can the Backroad Status Layer help me?
Avoid dead-end approaches caused by washouts or gates
Choose the best approach route for backcountry objectives
Understand seasonal closures so you can plan ahead
