Overview
Segments break Verified Routes down into smaller, navigable sections — each with its own description, stats, and visual indicator on the map. Instead of treating a route as one long line, Segments help you understand the distinct parts of a journey and the key transition zones between them.
Segments are available on Verified Routes within our Expert Collections, written and curated by ACMG guides and trusted contributors.
How do Segments work?
When viewing a Verified Route, the route is automatically broken down into Segments by the contributor. Each Segment represents a meaningful section of the route, such as:
An approach from the trailhead
A glacier crossing
A technical climbing pitch
A ridge traverse
A descent line
Important transition zones — where terrain, hazard, or required skills change — are visually highlighted on the map, so you can see at a glance where the character of the route shifts.
What information do Segments show?
Each Segment includes:
A written description from the contributor, specific to that section — covering route-finding tips, hazards, and what to expect.
Section-specific stats available on hover, including distance, elevation gain, and other relevant metrics for that part of the route.
A clear visual on the map so you know exactly which portion of the route the description and stats apply to.
Where can I find Segments?
Segments appear automatically on any Verified Route within our Expert Collections. To explore them:
Open a Verified Route from one of our Expert Collections.
Scroll through the Segments listed alongside the route.
Hover over a Segment to view stats specific to that section, or tap to read the contributor's full description.
For more on Verified Routes, see About Verified Routes.
How can Segments help me?
Plan more confidently — understand the distinct parts of a route before you leave home.
Anticipate transitions — know where terrain changes, gear comes out, or decisions need to be made.
Read expert beta in context — get the contributor's notes for the specific section you're standing in, not buried in one long description.
Track progress on the day — break the day into recognisable milestones rather than one big push.
If you have questions, feedback, or ideas on how we can improve Segments, we'd love to hear from you. You can reach us at [email protected].
