Munter Score Predictions

Predict how long a route may take you, personalized from your Strava, Garmin, or in-app activity history.

Written by Daniel

Overview

We use the Munter Score to help you predict how long a route may take you — not a generalized estimate. Whether you're plotting a route from scratch or selecting a Verified Route from one of our Expert Collections written by ACMG guides, our prediction gives you a personalized time estimate based on your own pace and fitness.

If you've connected Strava or Garmin, or recorded activities directly within Granite, your Munter Score is calculated from your previous activities over real terrain — so the estimate adapts as you do.

How does Munter Score work?

The Munter method is a long-standing technique used by alpine guides to estimate travel time based on distance and elevation gain. Granite takes it a step further by personalising the rate to you.

When you connect Strava or Garmin (or record activities inside Granite), we look at your past trips to understand:

  • How quickly you cover distance on flat and rolling terrain

  • How efficiently you gain elevation

  • How your pace changes by activity type (hiking, ski touring, scrambling, etc.)

From there, we calculate a personalized Munter rate and apply it to any route you're viewing — giving you a time estimate that reflects your actual fitness rather than a generic average.

How do I enable Munter Score Predictions?

  1. Connect your Strava or Garmin account from your Granite profile settings, or start recording activities directly inside the Granite app.

  2. Once we've processed enough of your activity history, your personalized Munter Score prediction will automatically appear on routes.

  3. Open any Personal Route you've drawn, or any Verified Route from our Expert Collections, to see your estimated time.

For details on recording an activity in-app, see Recording a route inside Granite.

How can Munter Score help me?

  • Plan smarter days — pick objectives that fit your available daylight and energy.

  • Make safer decisions — know when a route is too ambitious before you commit.

  • Compare options — quickly see how two routes stack up in time, not just distance.

  • Track your progress — as your fitness improves, your Munter Score reflects it.
